At Navan Dental, our Implants are normally the best way to replace teeth that are missing, or beyond repair. Made of titanium, they are inserted into the bone, and once in position they are used to provide a stable support onto which to build replacement teeth.
Tom qualified from The Queens University, Belfast, in 1978, having been awarded the John Malone medal for excellence in operative dentistry. As well as entering general practice, Tom retained links with Queens University Dental School by working as a clinical teacher in periodontics (gums) for 10 years.

Why replace missing teeth with a Dental Implant?
Not having all of your own teeth can really damage your self-esteem and confidence. Tooth loss can also affect how well you chew, and what foods you can eat, as well as changing your bite (the way that your teeth come together) which can lead to problems with your jaws.

Why choose a Dental Implant?
Implant supported teeth are the closest alternative to natural teeth, providing a long-term solution to your dental problems, often lasting a lifetime. Just like natural teeth, they allow you to eat all the foods you like, and are easy to keep clean. They can be placed without damaging other healthy teeth, unlike bridges. They are also fixed in place, and aesthetically, are more pleasing than dentures.
What happens during Dental Implant Surgery?
Under a local anaesthetic a small cut is made in the gum, and a titanium screw is put inside the bone. It takes between 8 and 12 weeks for implants to fully integrate with the bone.
Once the implant is fully integrated, a mould is taken to create a custom-made abutment designed for your tooth, after which a crown is fitted to replace your missing tooth or teeth.
Dental Implant Step 1
Implants are used to replace the roots of missing teeth. They are a fixed solution to a single missing tooth or an entire jaw of missing teeth.

Dental Implant Step 2
After an implant is placed into the jaw bone, it may either be restored almost immediately or it is allowed to heal for several months to become integrated within bone. After healing, a post is attached to the implant using a screw.

Dental Implant Step 3
A crown is then made to attach to the post. The crown is made using metal and/or porcelain and is made to closely replicate the shape and colour of the natural tooth.

Dental Implant Step 4
The crown is screwed or cemented onto the post. Implant therapy usually takes a few months and several appointments to complete, however, the final restoration can be almost like having your own tooth back!

FAQ's
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are a long-term solution for missing teeth. A titanium root (implant) is placed into the jaw and supports a natural-looking replacement tooth, usually finished with a ceramic crown. Navan Dental practice uses modern dental implant systems to help create secure, stable results.
Am I suitable for dental implants in Navan?
Many adults can be suitable, but it depends on gum health, general health, and bone levels. If there is not enough bone, your dentist may recommend a bone graft or bone grafting to build a stronger foundation before placement.
What happens during dental implant surgery?
Implant placement is typically carried out under local anaesthetic. The dentist places the implant (the titanium root) into the jaw and allows time for it to integrate with the bone before the final crown is fitted.
How long does dental implant treatment take?
Treatment time varies, but it often takes a few months from implant placement to your final crown. If you need bone grafting or other preparation work first, it can take longer, but it helps improve the long-term success of the implant.
Do you ever need a bone graft for dental implants?
Yes, sometimes. A bone graft may be recommended if the jaw bone has shrunk after tooth loss or due to gum disease. Bone grafting is used to rebuild volume so the implant has the support it needs.
What are maxillary sinuses and why do they matter for implants?
The maxillary sinuses sit above the upper back teeth. If you are missing upper teeth, the bone in that area can be thinner, and your dentist will assess the sinus position before placing implants to ensure treatment is safe and predictable.
What are the benefits of dental implants compared with dentures or bridges?
Dental implants are fixed in place and can feel closer to natural teeth. In some cases, a removable denture can move when you eat or speak, whereas implants are designed to stay secure. Implants can also be placed without relying on neighbouring teeth like a bridge often does.
How long do implants last and how do I look after them?
With the right home care and regular check-ups, implants can last many years. Good cleaning habits and routine maintenance appointments help protect the implant and the surrounding gum and bone.
I’m nervous about treatment, can you help?
Yes. Navan Dental supports anxious patients and aims to create a calm, supportive dental experience from consultation through to aftercare. Our dental professionals will ensure that your every need is properly met. If you have had a difficult experience elsewhere with oral surgery, let the team know so they can tailor your visit.
Can I get other treatments alongside implants?
Yes. Many patients combine restorative care with cosmetic options such as Teeth Whitening, depending on your goals. Your dentist can advise on the best order of treatments so your final smile shade matches your planned crown.
Is Navan Dental connected with Dental Care Ireland?
Navan Dental is part of Dental Care Ireland, which supports practices with shared standards and patient-focused care.
